{"id":944,"date":"2013-04-09T14:16:29","date_gmt":"2013-04-09T06:16:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.computersolutions.cn\/blog\/?p=944"},"modified":"2013-04-09T15:37:38","modified_gmt":"2013-04-09T07:37:38","slug":"power-over-ethernet-wifi-adaptors-tp-link-tl-h18","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.computersolutions.cn\/blog\/2013\/04\/power-over-ethernet-wifi-adaptors-tp-link-tl-h18\/","title":{"rendered":"Power over Ethernet Wifi adaptors (TP Link TL-H18)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We often have clients that complain about wifi in different area&#8217;s of their apartment being weak.<\/p>\n<p>While there are a number of solutions to that, such as running additional cabling, adding additional routers via WDS, using \u7535\u529b\u732b (ethernet over power) adaptors etc, we decided to try out a newish all in one solution from TP Link.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/sheedl\/8633638352\/\" title=\"TP Link HomeAV packaging by sheedl, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8254\/8633638352_e89419861e.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" alt=\"TP Link HomeAV packaging\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This ties together 2 paired mini wifi routers via power over ethernet (HomeAV).<br \/>\nSee the Chinese diagram below for a clear example.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.computersolutions.cn\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/T2NSW.XcBaXXXXXXXX_1040450854.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.computersolutions.cn\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/T2NSW.XcBaXXXXXXXX_1040450854.jpg\" alt=\"T2NSW.XcBaXXXXXXXX_!!1040450854\" width=\"750\" height=\"644\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-945\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.computersolutions.cn\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/T2NSW.XcBaXXXXXXXX_1040450854.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.computersolutions.cn\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/T2NSW.XcBaXXXXXXXX_1040450854-300x257.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What does it do?<\/p>\n<p>Well, you can plug one router in where your internet connection is, then plug the other router where your signal isn&#8217;t \ud83d\ude09  With a bit of luck, it will connect successfully over your power lines automagically, and there is no configuration needed other than adding in your internet settings at the router side. <\/p>\n<p>The units provide both Ethernet and Wifi at both ends, so they&#8217;re a good solution for both wired and wireless access.<\/p>\n<p>The units we bought only have Chinese firmware at the moment, but its pretty much set, and forget for most users.<\/p>\n<p>They also come reasonably well documented &#8211; each unit has a sticker with its ip address and user\/pass.  Yay!  <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/sheedl\/8632539053\/\" title=\"TP Link HomeAV by sheedl, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8264\/8632539053_763805cfec.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" alt=\"TP Link HomeAV\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As you can see below, one unit has 2 ethernet connectors, and the other has 1 ethernet connector.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/sheedl\/8632539245\/\" title=\"TP Link HomeAV by sheedl, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8239\/8632539245_604cd88eef.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" alt=\"TP Link HomeAV\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The unit with 2 connectors sits at your modem side (it can also extend an existing network if you have another wifi router already).<br \/>\nThe WAN port plugs into your modem or network (as appropriate for your needs).<br \/>\nThe LAN port provides a network port for use.<\/p>\n<p>The other unit plugs in elsewhere (eg in a suitable location where you need wifi or wired connection).<\/p>\n<p>I initially thought our initial unit was faulty, as it would only pair to the second adaptor for a few seconds, then stop pinging its ip address (192.168.1.254 as per its label)<br \/>\n&#8211;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/sheedl\/8633746738\/\" title=\"TPLink HomeAV adaptor by sheedl, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8528\/8633746738_7f9df3351a.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" alt=\"TPLink HomeAV adaptor\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Turns out that once its booted up and paired, it gets an address via DHCP from the main<br \/>\ndevice, so whats written on the back of the unit no longer applies.
