1) Find out the Network name and Mac address for the computer:<\/div>\n

System Preferences \/ Sharing \/ Computer Name<\/div>\n

Write it down, we’ll need it in step 2.<\/div>\n

Mac Address is here:<\/div>\n
System Preferences \/ Network – \u00a0Ethernet \/ Ethernet<\/div>\n

mac address – 00:1b:00:99:cd:1a<\/div>\n
Write it down, we’ll need it in step 2.<\/div>\n

2) Create a Time Machine Empty Backup file in Terminal<\/div>\n
Open up Terminal<\/div>\n
Spotlight-> Terminal<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Change to the root folder.<\/div>\n
cd \/<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
We’ll need to paste this into terminal –<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
hdiutil create -size 300g -fs HFS+J -type SPARSEBUNDLE -volname “COMPUTER NAME” “COMPUTER NAME_MACADDRESS.sparsebundle”<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

Replace COMPUTER NAME and MACADDRESS with the ones from step 1. The MACADDRESS needs to have bypass surgery to remove its colons.<\/div>\n

Computer Name: Lawrence Sheed\u2019s MacBook<\/div>\n
Mac Address: 00:1b:00:99:cd:1a<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

hdiutil create -size 300g -fs HFS+J -type SPARSEBUNDLE -volname “Lawrence Sheed\u2019s MacBook” “Lawrence Sheed\u2019s MacBook_001b632eb218.sparsebundle”<\/div>\n

3) \u00a0Copy file to the network share in root folder \\<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
Once you have the file created in step 2, copy that file to the Network Share where you want to use Time Machine.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The backup file needs to go to the root folder \\ on the share.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
4) Configure Time machine to allow use on network shares<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
(in terminal)<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
4) In Time Machine, point to the drive.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
System Preferences \/ Time Machine<\/div>\n
Choose the network drive..<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
It will now allow you to backup to the network share.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Tested and working in 10.5.5 Leopard.<\/div>\n
