Although most of my friends are using 3G/s now, I do get the odd 2G phone to play with.
Today I had another crack at enabling MMS on a 2G. For some reason not much documentation, and too much misinformation out there on the net.
Guaranteed working instructions for China Mobile users below:
Note #1 – this is for 2G iPhones only. 3G and newer phones, skip to the MMS settings at the bottom of the post, and put those in Settings / General / Network / Cellular Data Network…
Note #2 – 2G users – if you used BlackRa1n to jailbreak, this will not work either, and will b0rk wireless. Use PwnageTool, and create a 3.1.3 jailbroken / boot neutered (carrier unlock) firmware, install that first, then continue.
iPhone 2G users –
Install 3.1.3
Jailbreak with usual steps.
Add cydia.ifoneguide.nl in Cydia / Sources
Wait a bazillion years for cydia to timeout with the various blocked in China repositories.
Click Search
Download Activate 2G MMS
Reboot
Normally we’d be done, however the MMS settings won’t let us save a diffferent MMS and GPRS name, so we need to install a specific IPCC (iPhone Carrier Setting file) for China Telecom.
As China Telecom is (at time of writing) not an official iPhone supplier, they don’t have an IPCC file, so we need to roll our own.
Here’s one I found earlier – ChinaMobileCarrierSettingsWithMMS.zip
Download that, unzip, and throw on the desktop.
We’ll need to tell iTunes that its ok to use the IPCC file first, so close iTunes.
Now head off to terminal (or a DOS window for those on Windows), then paste this in.
Mac users:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE
Windows users:
(32 bit)
“C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe” /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1
(64 bit)
“C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes\iTunes.exe” /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1
Done?
Ok, now open iTunes again, connect the phone if its not connected, and..
Mac Users:
Press + hold down Alt(option), and Click “Update”
Windows Users:
Press + hold down shift, then Click “Update”
iTunes will prompt you for a file.
Choose the IPCC file you downloaded.
Sync the phone.
Finally… shut the phone off again.
Once you power up again, you should be able to send/ receive MMS!
If its not working for you, check that the settings are in there –
Settings / General / Network / Cellular Data Network
(anything not listed below should be empty)
Cellular Data
APN -> cmnet
MMS
APN -> cmwap
MMSC -> http://mmsc.monternet.com
MMS Proxy -> 10.0.0.172
MMS Max Message Size -> 300172
Tested, and working on lots of 2g iPhones.

Hi,
Thank you for this help, i just had a problem with itunes9, when i selected the file
CMCC_cn.ipcc then i tunes reported an error -27 “cannot update because of
unknown error” LOL, what can i do?
Thx!
Make sure you’ve enabled ipcc files in iTunes..
Should be in the instructions above…
I’ve have instructions listed on the site on how to setup MMS on the iPhone: http://en.yjohny.com/2009/06/27/how-to-activate-mms-on-iphone-os-3-0-in-china/comment-page-1/#comment-1071
Just tried to do this on my 3.1.3 with itunes 9.0.3.15 Got an error when loading the ipcc, went for a minute then errored, now my phone wont connect to any carrier. Gonna try on a lower version of iTunes, but afraid the issue may be the ipcc not working with OS’s > 3.1.2 and will need to downgrade to 3.1.2. Will update on findings for anyone else who may have had similar issues
I did a friends the other day worked fine on 3.1.3 on Pwnage.
Rather depends how you did the upgrade though, i did have that issue with mine on Blackra1n, I did a restore using Pwnage 3.1.3 and it did work though.
I guess will have to tell people ONLY do if Pwned.
If you do need PwnageTool or other files, they are on my http://www.iphonesim.cn site under the Downloads folder.
I have a pretty comprehensive set of anything iPod/iPhone/iPad related on there.
Lawrence.
Yup, think you hit the nail on the head, my 3.1.3 was via Blackra1n as well. I was already rolling on the downgrade, so just went with that. Works great now too, thanks for the great guide, been meaning to do this for awhile!
BTW, do you know if I can unlock the China Unicom 3Gs A1325 just like I would an international 3Gs? Got one to do for a family member and have looked for info but my Chinese reading comprehension is about that of a drunken third grader…
My iPhone repair guy has fixed a couple of local 3Gs’s – he says no wifi ever on those – they didn’t populate the board with wifi components, so Apple really did make a separate China version…
They can be jailbroken though, but really no point if no wifi anyway.
On a side note the new (old) thing these days is iTunes coupons. They’re popping up on TaoBao again – buy $250 of iTunes for 50rmb, guaranteed working. I know at least one person who tried this – he populated his iPad with apps.
Haven’t been able to unlock the Unicom ones yet. They use a different bootloader and none of the foreign tools appear to work.
Suggest take a peek at weiphone or tgbus, as they’re pretty good at that side of things.
I haven’t seen it being unlocked though, so probably hasn’t yet
I don’t have one to play with – I only had access to one for about 2 hours, before the owner got tired of me trying to hack it
Ah, apparently blacksn0w works for them (although that would be tethered, meh)
See here – http://www.test3g.com/thread-52430-1-1.html
I guess I need to beg / borrow / steal one for a while again, and give it another go
Check out this site for some info:

Just to clarify – My post above is only for 2G iPhones.
2G does not support MMS in the OS, so you DO have to follow my steps above. Again, only do if you’re running a Pwnage Tool firmware, as Blackra1n doesn’t work properly and you lose cellular if you follow this (until you reinstall with PwnageTool firmware)
3G and 3Gs / 4G etc all support MMS, so those phones are easy to setup.
Lawrence.
I subscribed to GPRS internet service and was told the only configuration is “cmnet” in the APN setting.
nothing seems to be working.
I just came back from the store and the guy told me that I need to update my OS?
doesnt seem to make sense to me.
any advice please?
thanks!
The instructions provide full info of whats required for MMS (and GPRS) on China Mobile.
Read carefully. ONLY follow the instructions relevant for your phone model.
i.e. if you have a 3G or a 3Gs, then don’t do the first steps, as those are only for a 2G iPhone.
Also, remember that the iPhone works on a preference order – WIFI, then 3G / GPRS, so if you are in a Wifi area, it will try that first.
Seems that Activate 2G MMS is no longer available within the ifoneguide repository. All I can find Native MMS iPhone 2G – but this unfortunately does not work on 3.1.3, limited instead to 3.1.2.
Then I noticed your URL, which doesn’t match the title.of this entry.
Are you sure the method you’ve listed still works? I tried something from a Thai repository (smart-mobile.com) but it doesn’t actually give me the MMS options within the phone’s network settings.
You’re absolutely correct, I have an updated 3.1.3 MMS setup that works for China Telecom, I’ll need need to write it up.
Give me a few hours to amend this.
I’ve uploaded the instructions to http://www.computersolutions.cn/downloads/iPhone_2G_3.1.3_tether_mms_bt.zip
Download, unzip, and follow. Its a bit manual, but it works for China Telecom on 2g.
May need to install one of the ipcc files to force cmwap and cmnet into the settings (can’t remember, as its been a while since i did it last), but it does work.
